ScotGEM Generalist Clinical Mentor (Year 4) - UOD2371

ScotGEM students are enrolled on a distributed and accelerated 4-year MBChB Programme which uses an innovative curriculum, designed to develop doctors interested in a career as a medical generalist within NHS Scotland. The programme is tailored to meet the current and future needs of the NHS in Scotland and focuses on rural medicine and healthcare improvement. GCMs are the anchor clinical educators for the Programme, providing students with high-quality role-modelling and clinical mentorship, and supporting the development of professional values and behaviours in practice.

All those taking on a GCM role in any of the years will be expected to be enthusiastic advocates for ScotGEM, promoting its ethos to students and amongst colleagues in order to positively promote rural and/or generalist practice. More specifically, GCMs will be expected to:

• Be positive and enthusiastic role models for students.
  • To demonstrate a strong interest in students’ progress.
  • Have a clear focus on their own personal development / reflective practice.
  • Present a solution focused approach towards challenges of health care provision.
• Ensure that the programme’s key themes are reproduced throughout the 4-year programme, such that the mission of the course remains coherent for the learner.
• Provide portfolio supervision support to students within their group.
• Facilitate learning opportunities within a relevant context.
• Play a key role in assessment (for example portfolio and OSCE examinations).
• Provide student support – through the teaching network and to direct to others as required.
• Attend / contribute to regular GCMs meeting, which will inform the development of the role and build a community-of-practice.
• Participate in required professional development activities relevant to their role.
• Support ScotGEM by being a positive ambassador for its mission, for students, staff and partners.
• Align with appropriate and relevant training, appraisal, QA and annual review process.

The final year consists of block rotations including Acute Care, Foundation Assistantship, Student Elective and Student Selected Components. The Year 4 GCMs will help ensure:

• Continuity of generalist medical education is maintained
• maintenance of a key anchor role within the curriculum which is highly valued by students
• provision of personalised portfolio support for students
• delivery of the ScotGEM mission

Year 4 GCMs will be required to:

• Support students through the transition into Year 4, from a primary care based year to a secondary care focused programme, promoting the overall integrity of ScotGEM and reinforcing the generalist-based emphasis of the course through to graduation.
• Provide continuity through ongoing contact with small student groups. This will take-place via regular small group 2-hour sessions (in person and virtual). These sessions will be largely student-led, with a focus on:
  • Generalist practice - at a time when much of their focus will be on specialty practice
  • Portfolio supervision
  • Facilitating peer support that students have valued in being part of a small group
  • Role-modelling and mentorship
  • Professionalism, aligned with portfolio requirements
  • Career guidance and preparation for practice Applications are welcome from existing GCMs, General Practitioners and Secondary Care clinical staff.
