Lead Science. Protect Animal and Human Health. Shape the Future.

The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) is Northern Ireland's leading provider of scientific research, surveillance, testing and evidence-based advice across the agri-food, animal health and environmental sectors. Our work underpins policy, safeguards public and animal health, and supports the sustainability and competitiveness of one of Northern Ireland's most important industries.

We are now seeking an exceptional scientific leader to become our next Director of Veterinary Sciences Division

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and serving as a member of AFBI's Executive Management Team, you will provide strategic leadership to a diverse portfolio spanning animal disease surveillance, veterinary diagnostics, food safety, emergency response capability and internationally recognised research programmes. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring AFBI continues to deliver scientific excellence while responding to emerging animal health, food security and One Health challenges.

This is an opportunity to lead one of the most influential veterinary science functions on the island of Ireland. Working at the interface of science, policy and public service, you will help shape regional, national and international approaches to disease prevention, disease control and food safety. Your expertise and judgement will inform decision making at the highest levels and contribute directly to the protection of animal populations, food systems and public health.

You will champion AFBI's scientific vision, driving innovation and ensuring that research, surveillance and statutory services continue to meet the evolving needs of DAERA, government, industry and wider stakeholders. You will lead the development of future research priorities, strengthen collaborations with universities and scientific partners across the UK and internationally, and ensure that AFBI remains at the forefront of veterinary and animal health science.

Beyond scientific leadership, this is a major executive role. You will inspire multidisciplinary teams, lead organisational change, manage significant resources and build effective partnerships across government, academia and industry. Success will require strategic thinking, strong business and financial management skills, and the ability to communicate a clear and compelling vision to a wide range of audiences.

We are seeking a leader with an outstanding track record in veterinary, animal health or related scientific disciplines, together with experience of leading complex scientific organisations, programmes or services. Most importantly, you will share AFBI's commitment to scientific excellence, innovation and public value.

Join us and help shape the future of animal health, food safety and scientific discovery.

Closing date for applications: 14 September 2026
