Strengthening Cambridge's leadership in bacteriology research 

Bacterial infection and antimicrobial resistance remain among the most pressing global health challenges of our time. At Cambridge, the Department of Medicine has a longstanding international reputation in infection and immunity research, with strengths spanning bacterial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, host-microbe interactions, genomics, metagenomics, mycobacterial disease, respiratory bacterial infection and vaccinology. 

We are seeking an exceptional Research Professor in the field of Bacteriology to build on this established strength and help shape the next phase of bacteriology research at Cambridge. Based within the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease, the successful appointee will establish and lead an internationally recognised research programme that complements and strengthens existing expertise across CITIID, the Department of Medicine and the wider School of Clinical Medicine. 

The role offers access to world-class research infrastructure, including containment level 3 laboratories, NHS microbiology links, and collaborations across the University and with partners including the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

This opportunity is open to both clinically qualified and non-clinically qualified candidates. 

Where the successful appointee is clinically qualified, agreed clinical duties may form part of the role, subject to the necessary contractual, professional-registration and approval arrangements. 

The successful appointee will bring an outstanding record of research leadership in bacteriology or a closely related field, with experience of securing significant external funding, leading collaborative programmes, mentoring researchers and students, and contributing to a positive and inclusive research culture. 

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant subject or demonstrate equivalent professional or research standing. Clinically qualified applicants must hold appropriate professional registration, a licence to practise and specialist registration in a relevant field, or equivalent registration in another country, as appropriate to the role.

Salary: Grade 11 or Grade 12, or clinical scale where applicable, depending on experience, standing and the approved level of appointment.
