The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) is a Faculty of King's College London and the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease. The IoPPN's greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of both its research strategy and educational activities, providing unique opportunities for students and staff.

This post is based in the Health Service & Population Research Department (HSPR) at the IoPPN. HSPR is a multidisciplinary department that conducts world-leading research using the health and social sciences to better understand and improve health outcomes, systems, and care, both locally and globally, with a particular focus on mental health and other disadvantaged and marginalised populations.

About the role:

This is an exciting new post to provide academic leadership in lived experience involvement and engagement in health research, based in the Health Service & Population Research Department (HSPR) at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience.

Patients, families, carers and the public are at the heart of our research, and we are investing in a new post to expand and support the development and dissemination of best practice approaches to patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), co-production and participatory qualitative research methods, as applied to mental health service and population research. The post holder will work with existing senior academic staff with expertise in lived experience, qualitative and co-production research methods, to build a distinctive programme of research, education, training and methodological innovation at the intersection of lived experience involvement in research and applied participatory qualitative inquiry.

The responsibilities of the role will include: strategic leadership of lived experience involvement and engagement best practice; development of a portfolio of empirical and methodological research that advances lived experience research and participatory qualitative research methods; leadership of and support for lived experience advisory boards and panels; leadership of and contributions to educational activities in relevant areas, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision; and development and organisation of a cross-university network focused on lived experience involvement in research.

This is a full-time post and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you:

Essential criteria

  • PhD awarded in relevant subject area
  • Experience of methodological and theoretical/conceptual scholarship relevant to lived experience involvement in research and participatory research
  • Experience of providing strategic leadership in lived experience involvement and engagement in research
  • Experience of line management and supporting staff and students to develop high quality PPIE/lived experience involvement plans for funded research programmes
  • Track record of securing external research funding and a clear plan for developing a funded research portfolio of relevance to lived experience involvement in research
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills, including track record of high-quality peer reviewed publishing and collaborations and networks
  • Experience of leadership in education and of teaching and student supervision at undergraduate and post-graduate level
  • Evidence of knowledge mobilisation, policy engagement, practice-facing research impact or public/community engagement relevant to lived experience, participatory or applied qualitative health research

Desirable criteria

  • Reflective, values-led, self-motivated and team-oriented
  • Strong understanding of the ethics of involving people with lived experience in research, including people from marginalised communities
  • Experience of developing training, guidance, methodological resources or advisory models in lived experience research, participatory methods, PPIE, co-production and/or qualitative research
