About the Role
Applicants are invited to apply for a new vacancy at Postdoctoral Research Associate level in Surgical Vision and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the development of AI methods for intraoperative tissue characterisation. The post is based within the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London, and the appointed applicant will carry out research at the South Kensington laboratories as well as at the Hammersmith and Charring Cross Hospitals. The Hamlyn Centre is dedicated to developing safe, effective and accessible imaging, sensing and robotics technologies that can reshape the future of healthcare for both developing and developed countries. The Hamlyn Centre is part of the Institute of Global Health Innovation and is supported by two stake-holding departments, Mechanical Engineering, and Surgery & Cancer.
The postholder will play a pivotal role in the development of novel AI techniques for image guided tissue characterisation during tumour resection procedures. This technology will enable accurate and highly personalised in vivo diagnosis and treatment with the aim of improving both the efficacy and safety of tumour resections. It is in response to the current paradigm shift and clinical demand for bringing into the operating theatre the latest technologies in cellular imaging and AI to allow for real-time tissue analysis and provide surgical guidance during tumour resection. To this effect, the role focuses on the integration of the following elements:
The post is funded by the CRUK Convergence Science Centre Development Fund grant “Developing an Intelligent Multiscale Fluorescence-Guided Intraoperative Tool for Brain Tumour Resection” led by Dr Stamatia Giannarou.
What you would be doing
The development of novel Computer Vision and AI methods for interpretable tissue characterisation during tumour resection. This will enable accurate and highly personalised in-vivo diagnosis, aiming to improve efficacy and safety of tumour resections. A key application is the resection of High-Grade Gliomas in neurosurgery.
What we are looking for
Hold a PhD in Computer Vision, AI, Image Guided Interventions, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
We are looking for high calibre applicants with expertise in at least a few from the following areas:
Prior experience in medical applications and medical data processing will be an advantage.
