Launch your cyber security career with the University of Buckingham

As the University celebrates 50 years since its founding, we continue to reflect the principles that made Buckingham distinctive from the beginning: agile thinking, independence, innovation and a willingness to do things differently.

As cyber security becomes increasingly important across higher education, we're investing in growing our own internal cyber security capability. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced IT professional who wants to build a career in cyber security without leaving behind the broader technical experience they've already developed.

About the role

This is not a traditional entry-level cyber security role, nor are we expecting you to arrive as a fully formed cyber security expert. Instead, we're looking for someone with solid technical foundations, the right attitude and a genuine passion for learning.

From day one you'll be carrying out meaningful technical work, with increasing responsibility as your knowledge and confidence develop. Unlike many cyber security roles, you'll gain experience across cloud security, Microsoft technologies, vulnerability management, security frameworks, user engagement and infrastructure, giving you the opportunity to develop broad technical expertise rather than specialising in a single area.

No two days will be the same, and you'll have the opportunity to help strengthen cyber security across the University.

About you

We're far more interested in your potential than whether you already hold a long list of cyber security certifications.

You'll already have experience in a hands-on technical IT role. More importantly, you'll be someone who enjoys solving problems, working with people and continually developing your technical skills.

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experience working in a technical IT support, infrastructure or systems role.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft technologies and networking fundamentals.
  • A logical approach to troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Curiosity, professionalism and a collaborative approach to working with colleagues.
  • A genuine interest in building a career in cyber security.

If you've already worked with Microsoft Defender, Intune, Entra, Conditional Access or Cyber Essentials, that's great, but it's not essential.

What makes this role different?

This role has been created as part of the University's long-term investment in developing its internal cyber security capability. Rather than expecting you to arrive as a fully formed cyber security expert, we're looking for someone with strong technical foundations, the right attitude and the ambition to continually develop.

Because of the University's size and collaborative approach, you'll gain experience across a much broader range of technologies and responsibilities than is often possible in larger organisations. You'll work alongside colleagues from across IT Services, combining cyber security with infrastructure, Microsoft cloud technologies, vulnerability management, security frameworks, user engagement and technical project delivery.
