Technician (Life Sciences)

About The Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated technical professional to support the delivery of high-quality laboratory teaching within a Life Sciences environment. This role is key to ensuring that teaching laboratories operate safely, efficiently, and to a high professional standard.

Working as part of a collaborative technical team, you will provide specialist support for laboratory practical classes, experiments, and a range of teaching activities. You will be responsible for preparing materials, equipment, and laboratory resources for practical sessions, working closely with academic staff and students to ensure laboratory-based teaching runs smoothly and effectively.

The role supports practical teaching across several Life Science disciplines, including Applied Medical Sciences, Genetics and Biochemistry, Pharmacy, and other related subject areas. As such, you will contribute to a varied teaching environment that uses a wide range of laboratory techniques PCR/ELISA/Microbiology techniques/Aseptic/GMO/Cat1-2 Biohazards, equipment, and experimental procedures.

Key responsibilities include preparing and maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities, operating and supporting specialist instrumentation, and ensuring laboratories are ready to support practical teaching. You will also assist in diagnosing equipment faults, resolving technical issues, and maintaining laboratory systems to ensure the smooth delivery of teaching activities.

Maintaining high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance is an essential part of the role. You will support the safe storage and handling of hazardous substances, assist with COSHH processes, and help ensure laboratories meet all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.

You will also provide demonstrations and guidance to staff and students on the safe and effective use of laboratory equipment and techniques, helping to promote safe laboratory practices and a collaborative working environment.

In addition, you will assist with the organisation of laboratory resources, including procurement and stock management, ensuring materials and equipment are available when required to support teaching.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.
