The role

The Weavers Group at the University of Bristol is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate, to join a Wellcome Trust funded programme aimed at uncovering the dynamic cell biology supporting tissue function and repair.

Our research seeks to uncover the cellular mechanisms that enable tissues to thrive, particularly under physiological and environmental challenge (see group website https://tissueresilience.com). The kidney is a highly complex, physiologically active organ that relies on diverse cell types working together and communicating dynamically. In this position, we will probe how cell biology is precisely patterned and coordinated across this tissue, in homeostasis and following challenge, and why its dysregulation drives ageing and disease. This work builds on recent findings from our team (e.g. Holcombe & Weavers Nature Communications 2023).

You will contribute to a multidisciplinary programme combining in vivo studies in Drosophila (with state-of-the-art live-imaging, genetics, molecular cell biology, spatial ‘omics, physiology), with innovative technologies and collaborative works on mammalian tissue and human organ transplantation. Harnessing these powerful approaches, our work spans multiple biological scales - linking the molecular cell biology of individual cells to the health of whole living tissues and organisms.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, enthusiastic team of researchers in Bristol’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Projects can be shaped by the candidate’s interests, with scope for independent directions. The Position is available for three years in the first instance, with potential extension, and offers strong opportunities for collaboration and career development. The position is available from December 2026, although the start date is negotiable.

What will you be doing?

You will use Drosophila for unparalleled opportunities to probe the dynamic cell biology of living tissues in vivo. A key focus will be how cellular metabolism and stress responses are coordinated across healthy and damaged tissues, building on our previous work (Holcombe & Weavers Nature Communications 2023; Burbridge et al., Development 2021).

You should apply if

  • You are highly motivated and have a track record commensurate to career stage.
  • You have a PhD in a relevant subject area (or be close to completion).
  • You have prior expertise in cell and/or developmental biology is required, alongside fluency in relevant techniques.
  • Previous experience working with Drosophila models is favoured but not essential.
