Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Role
We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a newly funded British Heart Foundation (BHF) research project investigating metabolic mechanisms linking intermittent hypoxia to cardiovascular dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a common clinical condition associated with major cardiovascular risk.

The project combines in vivo cardiovascular phenotyping in murine models with integrated molecular, cellular, genetic, and metabolic approaches to investigate how hypoxic stress alters cardiometabolic regulation. Experimental work will include advanced physiological phenotyping, mechanistic studies of metabolic signalling pathways, and translationally relevant models of intermittent hypoxia.

The successful candidate will join the laboratory of Dr Gabor Czibik at the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI), Queen Mary University of London, and become part of a dynamic and collaborative multidisciplinary research environment spanning cardiovascular physiology, metabolism, endocrinology, and hypoxia biology.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated early-career researcher seeking to develop expertise in integrative physiology and translational cardiometabolic research.

About You
Applicants should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in cardiovascular physiology, experimental cardiology, biomedical science, metabolism, or a related discipline.

The successful candidate will have experience in in vivo murine physiology and a strong interest in cardiovascular and metabolic research. Experience with cardiovascular phenotyping techniques such as echocardiography, haemodynamic measurements, or related physiological approaches is essential.

Experience in molecular biology, histology, biochemical analysis, hypoxia biology, metabolism, or integrative physiology would be advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate strong experimental, analytical, and organisational skills, together with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are intellectually curious, motivated to develop new experimental approaches, and enthusiastic about translational cardiovascular research.

The PHÆDRA project aims to uncover previously unrecognised metabolic mechanisms linking intermittent hypoxia to cardiovascular disease. The work addresses an important unmet clinical need, as current therapies for OSA improve respiratory symptoms but do not.
