The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence. The Oxford Social Sciences Division represents one of the largest groupings of social scientists in the world, with over 1,000 researchers and 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students exploring major challenges facing humanity, such as climate change, migration, global governance, justice, poverty and international development. In 2025 the University of Oxford ranked second in both the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for Social Sciences and QS World University Rankings for Social Sciences & Management.
The fifteen outstanding departments, faculties and schools within the Social Sciences Division create an intellectually fertile environment for social scientists to thrive. The Divisional Office supports the administrative functions in departments, as well as academics and researchers directly, by undertaking much of the day-to-day work relating to planning and resource allocation, the administration of academic appointments, on-course graduate administration, detailed supervision of education and research, and fundraising for professorships, scholarships and capital projects.
About the Role
This role is part of the Connected Communications Service (CCS), a unique shared service communications resource within the Social Sciences Division. The CCS combines the deep understanding and expertise of an in-house team, fully integrated into the University’s unique culture, with the fresh perspective and strategic approach of an external communications agency. The CCS currently works for four of the 15 departments within the Division, providing full-service communications and events support through a team of specialist and strategic support coordinated by the CCS Comms Officer role, who acts as the main point of contact for the department.
The CCS is looking for a digital communications professional who is comfortable working to multiple deadlines and managing a busy workload to support communications for several of these departments.
This role is hybrid or based in the divisional office, with the opportunity to work remotely for part of the week, with the expectation that the post holder works in-person at the Divisional office to attend weekly team meetings on a Wednesday morning. This post is 0.4FTE and fixed term until 31/07/29, in the first instance.
About You
The successful candidate will display excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills and have the ability to inspire the confidence of colleagues. The post holder will understand digital communications, with experience working with website content management systems, social media management and reporting tools, and the Office suite. The Digital Communications Assistant will report to the Digital Communications Manager, who leads the delivery of digital and social media strategies for the SSD and CCS client departments.
Application Process
As part of your online application you will be required to upload a supporting statement demonstrating with evidence how you meet each of the selection criteria, and the details of two referees.
For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Kate O’Connor, Head of Communications (Social Sciences) and CCS Manager at kate.oconnor@socsci.ox.ac.uk
The closing date for applications is midday on 20 October 2026. Interviews will take place during week commencing 26 October.
Committed to equality and valuing diversity.
