About the role:
The Materials Section in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking to recruit an Assistant Professor with expertise in civil engineering materials. We welcome applications from candidates working across any area of materials relevant to civil engineering, including those with expertise spanning multiple materials or modelling approaches that complement our infrastructure materials characterisation facilities.
Relevant areas include, but are not limited to, cementitious materials, steel and metals, glass, timber, ceramics, composite materials and biomaterials.
The successful candidate will have an established research profile with strong potential for impact. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research can influence engineering practice, policy development, industry, government, regulators and international agencies. Experience of contributing to undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching would be advantageous.
The postholder will develop and lead an original programme of research, secure external funding, and build collaborations within the Department, College and wider research community. They will be expected to develop and manage research projects, supervise and mentor research students and staff, publish in leading journals, present at international conferences, and engage with industry and other stakeholders to maximise the impact of their research.
What you would be doing:
You will develop and lead an original programme of research in civil engineering materials, addressing important engineering and societal challenges. Working independently and collaboratively across the Department, Faculty and College, you will secure external research funding, lead research projects, and build a thriving research group comprising postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate and undergraduate students.
The role includes supervising, training and mentoring research students and staff, including PhD candidates, publishing in leading international journals, presenting at major conferences, and engaging with industry, government and other stakeholders to maximise research impact.
You will contribute to teaching and assessment across undergraduate, MSc and doctoral programmes through lectures, seminars, tutorials, coursework and supervision. This will include contributing to teaching on the MEng Civil Engineering programme and the third-year design project, as well as developing and supervising undergraduate and MSc research projects.
In addition, you will provide academic and pastoral support and contribute to curriculum development and the continuous enhancement of teaching, learning and assessment.
What we are looking for:
A PhD (or equivalent experience) in Civil Engineering Materials or a related field.
A developing national reputation in Civil Engineering Materials.
A strong publication record, commensurate with career stage.
Experience of training undergraduate and postgraduate students, and supervising higher degrees (PhD) is desirable
