About us
UCL History of Art is a leading department within the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences, internationally recognised for its teaching and research in art and visual culture. Our academic staff work across diverse geographical and historical contexts, with particular strengths in image cultures, materiality and visual technologies.
Based at UCL East in Stratford, the MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media prepares the next generation of conservators specialising in contemporary art. The programme focuses on contemporary sculpture, installation art, complex mixed-media works, time-based media artworks and contemporary design. Students benefit from dedicated conservation facilities at the Marshgate Building and from the programme's links with cultural partners including the Victoria and Albert Museum.
About the role
The Department of History of Art is seeking to appoint a part-time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in the Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media with specialist expertise in time-based media conservation to cover a period of research leave.
This fixed-term role runs from 1 January to 30 April 2027 at 0.4 FTE (two days per week). The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, assessment and supervision on the MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media during the second term of the 2026/27 academic year.
Key responsibilities include:
About you
You will have substantial professional experience and specialist expertise in the conservation of time-based media artworks, together with a commitment to teaching and supporting future conservation professionals.
You will understand the practical, theoretical and ethical challenges of conserving contemporary art. Relevant expertise may include video, film, software-based artworks, media installations or other complex time-based works.
Applications are welcomed from practitioners working in museums, galleries, collections, conservation studios or independent practice. Previous university teaching experience is desirable but not essential.
Given the specialist nature of this role, we welcome discussion of flexible arrangements, including job-share proposals and applicants wishing to combine the appointment with other professional commitments.
