About the Role

You will join an exciting public health research programme into 'compression of morbidity' - looking to fundamentally shift how we think about prevention of late-life diseases like dementia.

You will undertake a research programme in collaboration with, and under the supervision of, Dr Sebastian Walsh in order to realise the objectives and development of a broader NIHR-funded research programme into compression of dementia morbidity. Working with Dr Walsh, you will (1) systematically review existing evidence on compression of morbidity; (2) develop methodological guidelines for the conduct of compression of morbidity analyses by leading a consensus exercise with an international expert group; (3) and apply these guidelines to re-examine the proposed modifiable risk factors for dementia for their effects on compression of morbidity.

You will be supported to prepare a doctoral dissertation describing the work completed in this post. Home PhD tuition fees and a training and development package will be covered in addition to salary.

About You

You should be passionate about public health research into healthy ageing and dementia. You should have an undergraduate degree, and ideally a master's degree, in a relevant subject (e.g. public health, epidemiology, demography, biostatistics). You should be comfortable working with quantitative data, epidemiological methods, and with people to drive impact.

About the School/Department/Institute/Project

The Wolfson Institute of Population Health (WIPH) includes 115 PGR students, 123 academics and over 500 staff in total across research, education and public engagement activities. The Institute has a strategic mission to improve population health and reduce health inequalities.

Within the WIPH, the post will be primarily based in the Centre for Preventive Neurology (CPN). The CPN is unique in being entirely dedicated to the prevention of neurological diseases, with a specific domain dedicated to dementia. The postholder will also benefit from collaborations with dementia and healthy ageing researchers in other QMUL Centres including the Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing (ACHA), the Centre for Public Health and Policy, and the Centre for Mental Health and Psychiatry.
