Associate Professors are eligible for consideration through regular recognition of distinction exercises for award of the title of full Professor. In exceptional cases, the title of full Professor may be awarded on appointment.
About you
We are seeking an outstanding scholar and teacher with a primary research expertise in the history of Iran with a focus on the Qajar period. This is an exciting and demanding post in which you will conduct advanced research, give lectures, classes and tutorials, supervise, support and examine students at undergraduate and graduate levels, and play a part in the administrative work of the Faculty and College.
Based at the Faculty’s centre in Pusey Lane in central Oxford, the postholder will be responsible for providing teaching within the BA Persian, BA in European and Middle Eastern Languages, MPhil/MSc in Modern Middle Eastern Studies, MPhil in Islamic Studies and History, MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies, MPhil in Islamic Art and Architecture. This teaching would typically be an average of between six and ten hours a week during term, made up of classes, lectures and individual tuition, alongside which would sit supervision of a number of graduate students.
While your teaching responsibilities will be arranged through the Faculty, students’ academic homes are their colleges. Colleges are important spaces for social and academic exchange and activities at Oxford. Wadham College has greatly valued its association with the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and has specifically built up its commitment to Near and Middle Eastern Studies. AMES and Wadham College are committed to promoting a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. Applications are particularly welcome and encouraged from women, black, and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
