We have an exciting opportunity to join the Cortes-Ciriano group in the Department of Paediatrics as Computational Postdoctoral Fellow.
You will drive the computational component of the ERC project BrokenChromosomes, led by Prof. Isidro Cortes-Ciriano. The project aims to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the onset and evolution in paediatric solid tumours, with a strong focus on understanding their role in cancer cell plasticity and immune escape. As part for the BrokenChromosomes team, you will be responsible for computational data analyses and driving your own research project, with visible leadership through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
You will be working in a growing department within the Medical Sciences Division. The Department of Paediatrics is a world leader in child health research and hosts internationally renowned research programmes in drug development, gastroenterology, haematology, HIV, immunology, neuroimaging, neuromuscular diseases, paediatric oncology and vaccinology.
The Cortes-Ciriano group works on understanding the molecular underpinnings of paediatric solid tumours, and the mechanisms driving immune escape and relapse. Our work combines large-scale computational analyses and computational methods development, with the design of novel experimental technologies. We work closely with other labs and clinicians across the UK and overseas, and co-lead national initiatives focused on paediatric oncology, such as the Stratified Medicine Paediatrics (SMPaeds) programme. Recent work from the group includes the discovery of Loss Translocation amplification chromothripsis, the rearrangement mechanism driving the onset and evolution of high-grade osteosarcoma, and the development of SIMMA, a single-molecule liquid biopsy assay based on nanopore sequencing. The Cortes-Ciriano group offers extensive opportunities for collaboration and specialised training in computational cancer genomics. You will benefit from scientific guidance and mentorship designed to foster your development towards achieving scientific independence. This commitment is reflected in the success of former Postdoctoral Fellows from the group, several of whom now lead their own research groups at leading industry and academic organizations.
This position is offered full-time on a fixed-term contract initially for two years with the possibility to extend provided further external funding is available.
This role may be eligible for Global Talent Visa.
About you
You will have a PhD in a quantitative discipline, such as, but not limited to, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or Computer Science, supplemented by relevant post-qualification experience in a research role. You will have a strong, demonstrable track record in data science and programming, evidenced by your publication record and contributions to research projects. You will possess experience in computational data analysis. Experience in genomics and cancer biology are desirable but not essential. You will have highly effective verbal and written communication skills with all level of staff staff and an ability to operate effectively in a demanding, multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment. Strong intrinsic motivation and an unwavering passion for advancing paediatric cancer research, driving innovation, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams in an international research environment are essential.
