Location: Oxford
Salary: £33,309 to £40,927 per annum. Grade 7
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 11th January 2022
Closes: 4th February 2022
Job Ref: 155549

Location: School of Geography and the Environment, South Parks Road, Oxford

Salary: Grade 7: £33,309 - £40,927 per annum

We are seeking an outstanding Research Associate to undertake research on greenhouse gas removal (GGR) as part of the new national GGR research hub, CO2RE. You will help lead CO2RE’s work package on economic policies and incentives, working with the hub’s lead investigators, fellow Research Associates and a wider group of affiliated researchers at the University of Oxford and elsewhere. This is a unique chance to work in a multi-disciplinary team, focusing on providing solutions to a pressing environmental issue.

The successful candidate will identify, expand and appraise the set of potential economic policies for GGR. This includes pricing, market design, mandatory obligations (such as the Carbon Takeback Obligation and Carbon Removal Obligation), carbon Contracts for Difference (CfDs), shifts to standards, regulatory changes and the reform of subsidies (e.g. Environmental Land Management Schemes, ELMs). Given the potential significance of offset markets for incentivising GGR, you will also help examine the standards and frameworks employed in such markets, seeking to deliver a more robust marketplace that inspires greater confidence in consumers and corporations and thus scales more rapidly. You will publish findings in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and present papers at major national and international conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research findings.

You must hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in economics, environmental economics, environmental policy or a related discipline, or a level of experience commensurate to the relevant career stage. You will possess sufficient specialist knowledge to develop novel research projects and methodologies. Publications in a relevant field, and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field, is essential. You will have highly-developed skills in both written and oral communication, including effective, high-impact engagement with stakeholders in decision-making and/or public.

Applications are particularly welcome and encouraged from women, black, and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in posts in SoGE. SoGE and SSEE are committed to equality and value diversity.

This is a full-time post offered for 2 years with the possibility of extension depending on funding.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12:00 noon on Friday 4 February 2022, and interviews will be in mid February 2022.
