Web Developer/Systems Integrator x 5

University of York - Information Services

The University of York is one of the UK’s leading universities. Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all. Centred in the picturesque village of Heslington on the edge of the historic city of York, our colleges are set in an attractive landscaped campus. We’re an employer of choice and offer range of benefits such as flexible working, long holidays and a generous pension seldom seen in the other sectors.

The Role

In this role you will integrate business systems and develop bespoke applications that provide staff and students with powerful tools that support the work of one of the top Universities in the UK. You will work on a wide range of systems involving all aspects of the University’s activity including finance, student support, teaching support and research.

We are looking for developers who can help us start building new services using AWS to create a new data and integration architecture. By joining us now, as we plan and design this new approach, you will have the opportunity to influence the implementation and gain a great deal of experience in the process.

Key Requirements

Some experience of AWS would be beneficial even if that knowledge has been gained through Amazon’s free tier. We are looking for people who have a good understanding of modern approaches to application and data architecture as well as a keen interest in development best practices and the tools that support it.

If you have experience in the following areas or can demonstrate the ability to quickly gain these skills this is a great opportunity to work in a collaborative and supportive team.

  • Java or Groovy, Grails
  • SQL and design of relational databases
  • HTML, XML and Javascript
  • Practical experience of development best practice

As a team we look for people who like to be constantly learning so we provide as much support as possible for this including weekly ‘team dev sessions’, time to investigate new technologies and attendance at relevant conferences (like the recent AWS summit).

We have five posts available on a full-time basis, on an open contract, available immediately. A flexi-time scheme operates which allows for flexible working within operational guidelines.

It is anticipated that technical tests will take place in advance of formal interviews, which will be held on 02 October 2017.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Andrew Male, Assistant Director (Enterprise Systems Group), 01904 324452 or andrew.male@york.ac.uk.
