Senior Network Engineer (Wireless)

The Network Platform team are responsible for the design and operation of firewalling, routing (EIGRP, OSPF and BGP), server loading balancing, wireless controllers and data centre networking within UCL and also at a number of other associated organizations.

You will be a member of the current operational team performing the duties required to operate, maintain and develop networking services at UCL.

The specific requirements of this post will be to act as technical lead for the university wireless networks – developing the wireless service, designing new wireless services and striving to improve the wireless services delivered to our customers.

In addition to the line of business operational work across all supported services, the post holder will be expected to be a technical expert in a number of network areas, the primary of which being wireless technologies, and to work on a number of projects with specific responsibilities to assist in the design and implementation of new and updated services in a scalable and maintainable configuration.

The post holder will also work closely with Network Connectivity and Data Centre Services teams.

The post holder will have broad experience of designing, administering, configuring and supporting networks. The post holder must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a professional approach to working as part of a team. The post holder should be enthusiastic about network technologies and demonstrate a willingness to learn and reflect upon technologies and working practice.

The key requirements are a deep and thorough knowledge and experience of dynamic routing within a medium/large campus network and the ability to troubleshoot complex networking problems thorough direct access to networking equipment and packet captures. Operational experience of wireless network management; cisco routing and switching; and monitoring and alerting tools is key. Experience of cisco and fortinet firewalls; and F5 application delivery controllers is also advantageous. A willingness to plan and implement continuous service improvements to ensure maximum customer satisfaction is also a must, and it is expected that a candidate would be up to date with current trends and changes in all aspects of networking and related technologies in order to actively participate in these improvements.

Knowledge and practical experience of a wide range of vendors and products, particularly Cisco and Aruba, would be advantageous.
