Research Fellow

Queen's University Belfast - School of Pharmacy

This post is available for 12 months (must not go beyond 30 November 2018), the post holder will work with Dr Katharina Edkins (PI) on an EPSRC funded project: ‘Hydrates in solution - probing pre-aggregation of hydrate forming APIs and water in solution’

Hydrated crystal forms incorporating water into their crystal structure are an especially challenging class of pharmaceutical materials to work with, as due to thermodynamic reasons these modifications show the lowest solubility in water and thus directly impact bioavailability and pharmacological effect of the drug compound. This project aims at developing a prediction tool for hydrate forms for the direct application in pharmaceutical industry. The methodology will be based on infrared and 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy in combination with computational methods.

The successful candidate will be working on selected model APIs chosen for their hydrate forming characteristics and the stability of the hydrated crystal form. The post will involve IR and NMR titrations, related analysis and model fitting, solid-state analytics and DFT calculations.

Anticipated interview date: Friday 17 November 2017
