Contract: 2 year fixed term contract, with potential to extend

Annual Leave: 25 days pro rata per annum in year 1, increasing by 1 day pa to 28 days

This is an exciting opportunity for a full stack web developer to lead on the development of data-driven web systems within a global organisation that is making a real and positive difference in the world. You will be responsible for ensuring that BirdLife’s web systems are efficiently and effectively delivered to meet the organisation’s needs and for the benefit of a wide variety of internal and external users.

Your day-to-day activities will be enormously varied.  Examples of tasks that you will undertake  include working with a third-party developer to implement new mapping functionality within the BirdLife Data Zone (, specifying a redevelopment of the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) website ( and developing an API to allow automated updating of BirdLife data into the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool ( In all cases you will be working with colleagues who are passionate about conserving global biodiversity and you will be a key component of this effort.

The technology stacks used are diverse although most applications are based on LAMP platforms using the Laravel framework. Ideally you will have experience and proficiency in a range of back-end and front-end development skills allowing you to maintain and improve existing systems while implementing new applications with the most appropriate technologies.

You will work with a wide range of people within the organisation and externally and your ability to build positive relationships and engage effectively at all levels will be key to the success of the role.

You will deliver high quality work with minimal supervision and you will have a proven ability to manage and prioritise workloads in a changing environment with competing demands. You will be a highly motivated and focused individual who knows that the provision of data and information is central to supporting the ambitious conservation goals of BirdLife.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • BSc qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • Substantial and demonstrable experience of developing data-driven web systems in a previous role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills targeting a range of different audiences.
