Director and Chair of PALS

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 10. The salary range will be competitive with benefits, inclusive of London Allowance.

UCL invites applications for the post of Director of the UCL Division of Psychology & Language Sciences (PALS) from candidates of the highest international standing. The position of Director is available from September 2018 for an initial five year term (renewable) in addition to a full-time professorial appointment at UCL. The Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (PaLS) undertakes world-leading research and teaching in mind, behaviour, and language. It brings together researchers in a range of disciplines such as cognition, neuroscience, linguistics, education, communication, medicine, health, phonetics and development, with common interests in the mind and brain, in both health and disease.

UCL Psychology is recognised as a global leader. UCL Psychology was ranked 6th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018. UCL was ranked 2nd worldwide for Psychology in the Times Higher Education rankings by subject (November 2017). Psychology was ranked 1st for highly cited publications in the 2015 RAND Europe bibliometric analysis ( ). In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise, UCL was the top-ranked university in the UK for research strength in Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (average research score multiplied by staff numbers submitted).

The Division is a vibrant environment for both study and research. It comprises 7 research departments/units, each with a Head/Director who reports to the PaLS Director.

The person appointed will be a highly effective leader with clear and focused vision, a strong strategist, and a first class manager who will foster and build on the excellence of PALS. He or she will have an outstanding track record in relevant research combined with substantial experience of academic and strategic management.  This background will enable the appointee to play a pivotal role in shaping strategic vision, directing and providing leadership for the Division to deliver key objectives, and developing and progressing the Division’s strategy, securing wider engagement across UCL and beyond.

We are seeking a person with vision, who has excellent leadership skills and is able to maintain and strengthen the culture and profile of the Division. He/she must be collegiate, able to represent the interests of their community, and be skilled at building partnerships and working effectively with multiple stakeholders. The candidate will demonstrate the focus required to deliver key objectives aligned to the strategies of the Faculty of Brain Sciences and UCL 2034 (

We are looking for someone with proven skills and experience in leadership and management including the areas of academic and strategic planning, research, education, enterprise and knowledge transfer, people management, and professional and quality assurance.
