PhD Studentship: Sustainable Solar Fuels: from Material Innovation to Circular Economy

University of Strathclyde

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Glasgow
Funding for: UK Students
Funding amount: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 27th March 2024
Closes: 1st May 2024

This three-year interdisciplinary PhD project aims to develop a sustainable platform for artificial photosynthesis to create solar fuels. It is part of an international effort, with a focus on advancing electrolyser catalysts and conducting comprehensive environmental and economic evaluations.

This project is funded (home fees & stipend) and there is one place available. The deadline for applications is the 1st May 2024.

REFINE: From solar energy to fuel: A holistic artificial photosynthesis platform for the production of viable solar fuels, funded through EU Horizon (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101122323).

This project aims to develop a hybrid platform system of artificial photosynthesis for the circular and sustainable production of butanol, a green platform chemical and advanced biofuel, from solar energy, water and waste CO2. This is realised via three integrated units: Unit 1, a photovoltaic unit converting sunlight to electricity, Unit 2 - electrolyser that uses novel catalysts based on earth-abundant materials to split water into hydrogen and oxygen with high efficiency and stability; and Unit 3, a bioreactor that uses bioengineered bacteria to selectively convert hydrogen and CO2 into butanol with high productivity and tolerance.

The successful candidate will carry out experimental work for the development of the (electro)catalyst for the electrolyser (Unit 2), and modelling work on life cycle environmental analysis and techno-economic assessment across multiple Units. The experimental work will involve electrocatalyst design, preparation, structural and compositional characterisation and electrochemical testing and the modelling work will involve materials selection, process modelling, economic analysis and life-cycle assessment.

What We Offer:

  • A Chance to Make a Difference: Work on a cutting-edge project aimed at developing a hybrid system for the circular and sustainable production of butanol, a key green chemical and advanced biofuel, from solar energy, water, and waste CO2.
  • Innovative Research Environment: Engage in experimental work focusing on the design and testing of novel (electro)catalysts and partake in groundbreaking modelling work for life cycle environmental analysis and techno-economic assessment.
  • Expert Guidance: Benefit from the mentorship of leading experts, Dr. Dragos Neagu and Dr. Xiaolei Zhang, who bring complementary expertise in experimental and modelling fields, respectively. Collaborate closely with a dedicated postdoctoral research associate and a network of distinguished EU consortium members.
  • Comprehensive Training and Development: Enhance your research experience and career prospects through our Postgraduate Certificate in Researcher Development (PGCert), a program designed to expand your skills, networks, and visibility in the research community.
  • International Collaboration: Join a vibrant community of researchers and professionals from across Europe, offering unparalleled opportunities for networking, learning, and career advancement.

Who We Are Looking For:
We are seeking highly motivated and innovative thinkers passionate about sustainable energy solutions and eager to contribute to a project with global implications. If you are ready to take on the challenge of developing sustainable technologies for the future and possess a strong background in chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field, we encourage you to apply.
