About the role

The UCL Department of Mathematics invites applications from candidates for the post of Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Pure Mathematics. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate level in Pure Mathematics, allocated by the Head of Department and reviewed occasionally by the Head of Department. They will also assist in developing learning materials, preparing schemes of work, and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance. The responsibilities of the post will include:

• Participating in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments.

• Attending examiners’ meetings.

• Acting as a second examiner and carrying out exam-related instructions as allocated by the Chair of the Dept Undergraduate Examination Board.

• Assisting the Admissions Tutor with interviews/open days for UCAS applicants. The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis, fluid mechanics, mathematical physics, geometry and topology, algebra, number theory and combinatorics, and mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

The post is available from 23 September 2024 to 22 May 2025 and from 22 September 2025 to 21 May 2026. Candidates should indicate whether they would like to be considered for both sets of 8 months or which 8 months they would like to be considered for if they are not available for both.

About you

The successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics or related subject area. They must be able to demonstrate teaching ability in pure mathematics at the undergraduates’ level and have the interpersonal skills required to work well with students and academic colleagues, have the ability to supervise academic work by undergraduate students, have excellent oral and written communication skills as well as be a commitment to high-quality teaching and fostering a positive learning environment for students. An outstanding candidate will have some experience in teaching using remote working technologies.
