Research Fellow (Composites Modelling and Testing) - 12397

Brunel University London

Vacancy Ref: 12397

The Brunel Composites Centre (BCC) is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow with expertise composites modelling and testing to join our team in Cambridge.

BCC is a newly established research and technology centre that sits between the knowledge base and industry offering high quality research in an innovative environment focused on physicochemical phenomena that take place at the interface of composites with other materials. For more info about BCC please visit

A collaboration between Brunel University London and TWI Ltd BCC has been awarded funding to work with companies across Europe and UK in the aerospace automotive construction and engineering sectors.

The post will involve work in the following fields:

Composites Modelling

  • Using commercial software packages and in-house code to model composite structures with embedded micro-sensor using Finite Elements Modelling (FEM).
  • Define novel ways for the inclusion of the micro-sensors in the model mesh including the effects of the sensor wires that will be embedded in the composite.
  • Simulate various loading scenarios (mainly tension and compression but also mixed modes)
  • Use the simulations in order to optimise the sensor positioning and performance in detecting damage in the composite.
  • Composites Characterisation.
  • Manufacture composite specimens.
  • Use existing test rigs and develop new test rigs for measuring the stress/strain curves in composite specimens.
  • Analyse tests results and compare to simulations.

The successful candidate should have:

  • PhD in composites modelling.
  • Evidence of sufficient knowledge composites processing and testing.
  • Experience in technical delivery of research projects within time and budget.
  • A high level of initiative and an ability to work independently and as part of a team..
  • Results-oriented approach be self-driven with a positive outlook and a clear focus on high quality work.

Closing date for applications: 21st June 2018
