The School of Engineering, Newcastle University wishes to appoint a Research Assistant/Associate/ Senior Research Associate to work closely alongside a team on an EPSRC funded project titled “REcycling of LIthium Ion Batteries” as part of the flagship £65m Faraday Battery Institute investment into battery technology. The project aims to develop hardware and software to determine lithium ion battery state-of-health and extend this to lifetime prediction for possible second life applications: this will build on considerable work carried out to date in Newcastle.

You will have obtained or be nearing completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline, including civil, environmental engineering, mathematics, mechanical, chemical, materials or manufacturing. You will have a degree underpinning your PhD in Civil Engineering or a relevant discipline.

You will develop new assessment methods for low carbon transport (EV) strategies and you will be able to evaluate vehicle battery packs and assess their socio-economic suitability for re-purposing or recycling. You must have demonstrable experience in research planning, risk assessment and experimental work. You must have a proficiency in mathematics and statistical analysis. You will have experience of University research, either as a PhD student or as a member of research staff and you will be able to work, if required, collaboratively with local and international industry partners and founding university partners to support your analyses. Senior appointments will be expected to produce excellent research outputs, provide academic leadership, effective project management and active supervision of junior colleagues.

ReLiB is a large multidisciplinary, multi-institutional project. You will be a team player on this new and exciting project, you must also be able to think independently and communicate clearly with stakeholders on a local and global level. You must be able to collaborate effectively and be willing to travel nationally and occasionally internationally.

This post is available full time, however reduced hours would be considered. The role is fixed term until 28th February 2020 with a possible extension to February 2021.
