Job Purpose

The role will combine part-time study for a funded PhD with a 0.5 FTE appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), including support for the Intellectual Property Research Group and collaboration with the CREATe research centre. At the date of appointment candidates will be registered or accepted for a PhD in the School of Law. Depending on qualifications and experience, appropriate training towards the role as GTA will be offered. This is a five year appointment, with PhD completion expected within this period.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities, including tutorials directed towards the delivery of subjects at undergraduate level.
  2. To contribute to the development of appropriate teaching materials to ensure content and methods of delivery meet learning objectives.
  3. To participate in the assessment process, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  4. To participate in the supervision of practical work, advising on skills, methods and techniques to assist the transfer of knowledge.
  5. To engage in professional development as appropriate and regularly update subject related knowledge base.
  6. To undertake limited administrative duties as requested by the Head of Subject or Head of School.
  7. To be familiar with subject-based pedagogy.
  8. To engage in professional development to remain current and ensure application of recent advances in knowledge to teaching.
  9. To provide academic support to a specified Research Group within the School of Law as directed by the Head of School so as to develop funded research projects, conferences and other research initiatives in line with the School’s research strategy. 

Standard Terms & Conditions

Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 6, £28,660 - £32,236 per annum pro rata.

This post is part time at 17.5 hours per week, and is fixed-term for 5 years.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
