The Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge, is pleased to announce a new three-year, full-time, post-doctoral fellowship in African archaeology, generously supported by the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
Applications are now invited from suitably qualified individuals for this position.
The overall objectives of the fellowship are to strengthen research in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene archaeology of sub-Saharan Africa, and to build longer-term research collaboration with partners on the African continent. We are especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated a capacity for innovative research, engaged scholarship, and cross-disciplinary thinking that combines humanistic and more scienceoriented approaches to understanding aspects of the archaeology of sub-Saharan Africa. As well as pursuing their research the successful applicant will have the opportunity for some limited teaching on African archaeology and thematic courses offered by the department, and to organize reading or working groups for graduate and post-graduate researchers. They will also be expected to organise and host a two-day, international meeting on an African archaeology theme to be agreed in consultation with Professor Paul Lane.
The specific field of research focus is open, within the parameters of the temporal range specified above.
However, the Department wishes to advance research in a number of specific areas, and therefore particularly invites applications from individuals whose work is defined by or focuses on at least one of the following areas:
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should have an excellent first degree and a doctorate in African archaeology, or a cognate field, a proven record of accomplishment in research output and show the potential of developing a research plan that will enhance and build upon the existing areas of excellence in any of the areas listed above. Because one aim of the post is to contribute to the creation of a platform for future long-term collaborations with partners on the continent of Africa, successful candidates must demonstrate how they plan to go about this while also pursuing their research.
