Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research assistant to be part of team working on slow earthquakes. The postholder will work closely with Dr Jessica Hawthorne, with responsibility for carrying out research to identify the physical processes that control tremor as part of a NERC standard grant. The postholder will provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including PhD and project students.

The postholder will conduct a series of targeted seismological investigations to test several of the proposed mechanisms: dilatancy, size limitation, low normal stress, and attenuation. The postdoc will consider how each of these mechanisms would manifest in seismic data. They will use and develop new seismic analysis techniques and will take advantage of high-quality data from arkfield, CA to assess a range of model predictions. The postholder may examine, for instance, tremor’s size distributions, moment-duration scaling, clustering, and rupture directivity.

The postholder will manage their own academic research and administrative activities, contribute ideas for new research projects, develop ideas for generating research income and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers. They will also carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, including U. Oregon, U. Strasbourg, and the USGS, and will act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and techniques.

The postholder must hold a PhD in geophysics or another relevant discipline by the time of appointment, they must have sufficient knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmers, and they must have the ability to manage their own academic research and associated activities and have excellent communication skills, including writing for publication, presenting research proposals and results.

The post is currently funded until 31 December 2021, with the possibility of extension to 30 months subject to funding agency agreement. We wish to fill the post as early as is practical. For further details of the post please see the job description.
