The Scottish Association for Marine Science is the oldest independent marine research organisation in the UK: one of the oldest in the world.  We are located on a modern campus adjacent to the European Marine Science Park, on the peaceful Dunstaffnage peninsula, a few miles from the scenic coastal town of Oban (‘The Seafood Capital of Scotland’).

Job Purpose – Contribute to discovery and applied research in the area of algal biotechnology and the development of research and funding strategies at both an institutional and a national level. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP), natural and physical sciences available at SAMS, developing trans and cross-disciplinary research with and/or impact nationally, UK, and internationally.

Types of activities-. SAMS has major strengths in algal research. It is both home to CCAP and operates two experimental seaweed farms. The ideal candidate will be willing to contribute to both research and commercial projects in algal biotechnology. They will identify, planning and initiate major research within this field of science, for example where gaps in knowledge exist, lead strategic decisions about what research directions to prioritise and develop and contribute to SAMS broader strategic planning.

The ideal candidate will be willing to contribute to both research and commercial projects as well as support SAMS teaching and education activities.

Attributes required - You will have a PhD in any aspect of algal biotechnology that will complement SAMS existing activity and strengths. Successful development of research proposals funded through UKRI or the EU or equivalent. Identifying research topics and initiating analysis that will be original and innovative with a proven track record of high-quality publications (REF3/4* standard).
