Postdoctoral Research Associate

The University of Edinburgh - Institute of Cell Biology

Location: Edinburgh
Salary: £33,797 to £40,322 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st January 2020
Closes: 21st February 2020
Job Ref: 051081

A highly motivated candidate is invited to join the research group of Professor Ken Sawin as a post-doctoral researcher. The group studies cell polarity, cell organisation, and the cytoskeleton, using a combination of genetics, microscopy, biochemistry, and proteomics approaches, and primarily using fission yeast S. pombe as a model eukaryote. In work funded by the Wellcome Trust, we are investigating how cell polarity is regulated by stress-signaling pathways. This post will involve determining the mechanisms by which the fission yeast stress-activated protein kinase Sty1 (homolog of mammalian p38 and JNK) regulates the cell-polarity module involving the Rho-family GTPase Cdc42. A range of experimental methods will be used.

Applicants should have (or be near completion of) a PhD in Cell/Molecular Biology, Genetics, or Biochemistry, with expertise in classical and molecular yeast genetics. In addition, knowledge and experience in all or a subset of the following techniques is important: DNA cloning; live-cell fluorescence microscopy; protein isolation/purification/characterisation; mass spectrometry/proteomics. The candidate should have an outstanding academic track record commensurate with career stage and experience, ideally including peer-reviewed published work. She/he is expected to be active in developing and the project, to collaborate as appropriate, and to contribute to an enthusiastic working atmosphere. The candidate will benefit from training in a vibrant intellectual and collaborative environment with state-of-the art equipment and resources, within the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology.

This post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 30 September 2023.
