1. About Us
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University was founded in 1924 and is one of the university's oldest departments. Lingnan is a remarkable place that has attracted and cultivated distinguished scholars. Fu Sinian（傅斯年）, Yu Dafu (郁达夫) , Cheng Fangwu （成仿吾）, Gu Xiegang （顾颉刚）， Zhao Yuanren （赵元任）, Luo Changpei （罗常培）, Lu Xun（鲁迅）, Guo Moruo（郭沫若）, Zhong Jingwen（钟敬文）, Lu Kanru（陆 侃如）, Feng Yuanjun （冯沅君），Wang Li （王力）, Cen Qixiang （岑麒祥）, Rong Geng （容庚）, Shang Chengzuo （商承祚）, Zhan Antai （詹安泰）, Fang Xiaoyue （方孝岳）, Dong Meikan (董每戡), Wang Jisi （王季思）, Xian Yuqing （冼玉清） and other senior scholars have left their footprints. These well-known scholars have made important contributions to the establishment and development of the Chinese Department.
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature
boasts 70 teaching staff, including 33 full professors, 34 associate professors, 3 lecturers. Among them are 39 Ph.D. supervisors, 4 national high-level talents, 4 national high-level young talents, 2 national “Ten-Thousand Talent Program” leading scholars, 1 young top-notch talent, 3 distinguished professors of the Guangdong Province “Pearl River Scholars”, 3 talents from“the Four ‘First Batch’ ”scheme of the Central Propaganda Department, and 5 talents from the “Outstanding Talents of the New Century” scheme of the Education Ministry. National –level talents such as Wu Chengxue ( 吴承学)，Huang Shizhong( 黄世忠), Peng Yuping ( 彭玉平) and Chen Weiwu ( 陈伟武) are outstanding representatives of teachers in the Chinese Department.
The older generations are the bedrock of our history, but the new generations sculpt the future. Since the turn of the new century, the Chinese Department has developed rapidly and its influence has been expanding. In 2000, the Chinese Department was bestowed the right to grant a doctoral degree in first-level disciplines. There are currently 10 doctoral programs and 11 master programs (Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese Paleography, Chinese Classical Philology, Comparative Literature and World literature, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Literary Theory, Folkloristics, Intangible Cultural Heritage Studies, Chinese Minority Language and Literature, International Chinese Language Education), a post-doctoral Study Center (Chinese Language and Literature), with a complete set of majors.
The Chinese Department has set up the “Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center of China”, a key research base for the humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and hosts the CSSCI source journal “Cultural Heritage”.
The goal of the Chinese Department's personnel training is to cultivate not only first-class scholars, but also excellent talents who possess a noble nationalistic spirit and the sense of the times, while being capable of performing foundational and innovative work in various fields of language and literature. In 2020, the Chinese Department plans to launch a global open recruitment of Professors as part of the “ Hundred Talents Program”, full- time research fellows and post-doctoral researchers.
Applicants with the following background are welcomed: Literary Theory, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Paleography, Chinese Classical Philology, Ancient Chinese literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Comparative literature and World Literature, Folkloristics, Intangible Cultural Heritage Studies (There is a particular demand for talents in Literary Theory, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature and World Literature).
Should have an education background as an undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate student in a well-known domestic or international university, scientific research institute, or higher education institute with the discipline as the preponderant discipline in the field and has obtained a PhD degree; has obtained comparatively good research results; and has great development potentials. Obtained a PhD degree within three years.
Remunerations and Benefits
I. Salary and Benefits: The University provides generous salary, research start-up fee, talent allowance, and settlement allowance. Talents working in Zhuhai and Shenzhen campuses can enjoy subsidies of the local campuses.
II. Housing Support: Talents can apply for the university's public rental housing. There are 1,200 new apartments in the Guangzhou campus; more than 1,000 new apartments and 1,500 new shared property houses in the Zhuhai campus; and 3,600 new talent indemnificatory apartments in the Shenzhen campus.
III. Quality Healthcare: There are 10 SYSU affiliated hospitals that provide high-level healthcare service.
IV. Children Education: SYSU has constructed affiliated primary and secondary schools and kindergartens in Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen campuses to provide high-quality elementary education for the children of faculty members.
V. Employee Wellbeing: Provides "sports time"; free use of sports facilities on campus; and annual health checkup. The Zhuhai campus provides meal subsidies.
