The School of Materials Science and Engineering is one of four disciplines awarded "Dual First Class" subjects at SCUT. It consists of 5 Departments, 5 Institutes, 1 State Key Laboratory (Luminescent Materials and Devices), 1 National Engineering Research Centre (Tissue Restoration and Reconstruction), 22 laboratories or technical research centres with international collaborations, 1 national demonstration centre for Experiment Teaching (Materials Science and Engineering), 1 National Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Centre (Luminescent Materials and Devices) and 1 International School of Advanced Materials (ISAM).  

ISAM is a part of the Network of International Centres for Education in China and reinforced by a range of dedicated supportive policies. ISAM has 2 major talent training programs: the Joint BSc+MSc Program and the Joint BSc+PhD Program. All major courses taught in English. 

Job Description and Qualifications 

We are seeking to appoint an Academic Fellow. A qualified candidate is expected to have a PhD degree in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry or related disciplines. We especially welcome people who are starting their academic career; or being retired; or taking sabbatical leaves.  

Candidates are expected to be of good teaching capability for one or several courses, including (but not limited to): Physical Chemistry, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics, Polymer Physics, Polymer Chemistry, Structural Chemistry, Modern Methods for Materials Characterization and Analysis, Materials Calculation and Simulation, Functions of Complex Variables, Mathematical Physics Equation. Other responsibilities of the post holders include: 

  • acting as one of key liaison points with students; 
  • delivery of a contemporary curriculum to students; 
  • supervision of students’ projects; 
  • engagement of ISAM with industry; 
  • support for expanding key international collaborations.

Salary and benefit 

The whole package includes: 

  • Standard salary range is RMB 300,000 – 1,000,000 per annum or pro rata for this role, negotiable according to the candidates’ current salary and benefits.  
  • Start-up research funds and laboratory space available for suitable candidates. The university will also support to apply for grants at national, provincial and municipal levels. 
  • Support for children’s enrolment in the university’s kindergarten and/or schools facilities.
