Research Associate (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit

The MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (Director: Professor Judy Hirst) wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join Professor Mike Murphy and the Mitochondrial Dysfunction group.

To work within a programme focussed on mitochondrial dysfunction in human diseases. Mitochondria house hundreds of biochemical reactions involved in processes critical for the survival and homeostatic adaptation of the cell. Beyond their role in energy production and cellular metabolism, mitochondria are involved in numerous cellular pathways the dysfunction of which leads to disease. Among these is stroke. Recent evidence from the Murphy lab suggest a role for mitochondria in heart attack and stroke.

The main goal of the project is to use optical and biochemical techniques to decipher how mitochondrial produce reactive oxygen species in cell models of mitochondrial ischaemia-reperfusion injury and to test potential therapies. To address these fundamental questions, the post-holder will employ optical and biochemical techniques in cell and animal models of ischaemia-reperfusion injury. In addition, the candidate will use bioenergetic and molecular techniques to analyse the redox metabolism of the cells. The post-holder will participate in every stage of the process. Finally, an important responsibility of the post-holder will be to ensure the smooth running of the lab by largely contributing to supervision of students, ensure external collaborations and establishment of new protocols for the lab.

Candidates will have PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology or a related discipline and a track record of related research achievements.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available to 31 December 2022 from 01 February 2021 in the first instance.
