The School of Digital Arts (SODA) is recruiting a Research Fellow who specialises in Digital Arts Practice and AI.

Building off the institution’s overarching ambition, the Manchester School of Art continues to push the boundaries of developments across the arts and creative industries. Based in the heart of Manchester, with close links with the growing creative and digital sector. The School is a pioneer in experimentation and creative learning and is now in the process of redesigning its Media provision in order to respond to industry needs. The School of Digital Arts is Manchester Metropolitan’s response to and an investment in screen-based business and technologies. It will create a digital skills powerhouse that will host a diverse programme of degree apprenticeships, Continuing Professional Development, work-based training, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and resources. It will build on the award winning strengths of the Manchester School of Art, and bring together creative and craft disciplines, technical and scientific skills, industry partnerships and global research to train the next generation of talent, who will ensure that the UK continues to compete on an international scale.

The University has made significant investment in state-of-the-art facilities for the School of Digital Arts (SODA) in order to support innovative provision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a particular emphasis on industry collaboration. This role requires a versatile approach and ability to contribute to a team that spans a wide range of digital arts disciplines, encompassing both academics and industry professionals.

The main purpose of this role is to lead in the development of quality research in the field of digital arts practice and AI using arts practice-based research methods to explore digital technologies, such as 3D software and game engines, digital haptics and sensory hardware, and creative applications of machine learning and AI, especially where they relate to one or more of the following SODA research themes:

  • Expanded documentary
  • AI and storytelling
  • Game engine cultures
  • Sonic bodies
  • Culturally engaged practice

Document and disseminate the findings to relevant academic groups, externally and within SODA.

Lead in the development of new areas in the field of digital arts and AI and to promote the wider work of the team and institution
