Organisation position and purpose

A Postdoctoral Research Scientist position is available for 20 months based in the Influenza Viruses Research Group, working on projects to understand differential chicken susceptibility to Avian Influenza viruses and determining which viruses are transmitted from infected chickens. This is an exciting position that will contribute to the fundamental understanding about transmission and pathogenesis of an economically important viral pathogen that a inflicts global burden on the poultry industry, threatening food security, animal welfare and human health via potential zoonosis. The post-holder will be responsible for the design and implementation of both in vitro and in vivo studies with avian species. The studies will incorporate traditional virology skills as well as cutting edge sequencing techniques.

Main duties and responsibilities

Responsible for overall experimental design and planning:

  • Designing detailed experiments.
  • Coordinating with the partners to generate and ship samples as appropriate.
  • Liaising with internal groups to utilise sequencing facilities and high containment laboratories.

Designing and performing infection assays for chicken cells and in vivo challenge with Avian Influenza Virus:

  • Generation of viral stocks.
  • Infectivity assays in embryonated hen eggs, cells and in vivo with low and high containment Avian Influenza strains.

Designing and performing host response assays chicken cells and in vivo to Avian Influenza Virus infection:

  • Design and validation of qRT-PCR assays for chicken innate response genes.
  • Analysis of host response from embryonated hen egg tissue, cells, and in vivo following infection with high and low containment Avian Influenza viruses.

Contribute to the Influenza Viruses Group:

  • Report data.
  • Produce presentations.
  • Publish peer reviewed manuscripts.
