Reports to: Associate Dean

Key Responsibilities 

  • Work with the Dean and members of Academic Board to establish a coherent and visionary approach to actor training. 
  • Work alongside the Head of Embodiment to recruit and manage Industry Professionals (IP) considering the use of imagination, body, voice and play in relation to the preparation of our students for performance focused work. 
  • Work with the Associate Dean and Head of Embodiment in co-ordinating the BA Acting programme. 
  • Work with the Associate Dean to develop opportunities for commissioning and co-commissioning a broad range of artists to create innovative performance projects matching ALRAs evolving ideological approach. 
  • Co-ordinate the Live & recorded work across the campus to assure equitable and innovate rehearsal and production environments. 
  • Broaden the use of recorded and digital media through the engagement of IP in staff training and integration into live rehearsal rooms. 
  • Lead on governing ALRA’s casting policy as it emerges, engaging with Working Groups to establish appropriate and equitable educational intervention with students. 
  • Foster an understanding of the breadth of current industry practice in the delivery of new work, contemporary film, digital and audio practice in relation to the actor and director training process we are developing within ALRA. 


  • Teach on ALRA courses for a minimum of 21 hours per week and maximum of 24 as agreed by Associate Dean 
  • Support and guide the Associate Dean, Head of Embodiment and Course Leader MA Professional Acting in casting and text selection. 
  • Oversee the recruitment and monitoring of appropriate teaching staff including directors for public facing live and recorded work. 
  • Implement effective student assessment and disciplinary procedures as directed and published in ALRA policies
  • Assess student work across all ALRA Courses  


  • Attend Teaching and Learning Committee 
  • Suggest curriculum improvements and developments in response to the changing industry landscape under guidance of the Associate Dean 
  • Oversee the timely delivery of SOW from Industry Professionals 
  • Engage in timely feedback in the form of written and/or verbal student reports 
  • Offer acting feedback on level 4,5,6 and 7 projects on all courses 
  • Supervise Personal Research Projects at level 6 and 7 as required 
  • Provide timely and accurate reports and information as required by the Dean to satisfy both internal processes and external organisations such as QAA, OFSTED etc. 


  • Take part in Widening Participation activities 
  • Participate in Open Days and other profile-raising events 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other key arts and education providers and potential partners as defined by SLC
  • Actively promote the academic and creative success of ALRA and its students to the industry, the education sector and the wider public 


  • Work with the Dean and Associate Dean to ensure resources are appropriate to the standards required for training. 


  • Initiate personal research that links to the curriculum development and impacts positively on the currency of ALRA’s training and education provision. 
  • Attend ALRA student productions, project presentations and public events 
  • Adhere to ALRA’s published policies, in respect of all staff, students and visiting members of the public
