The Academic Quality Team is responsible for strategy and policy development and the provision of advice, guidance and support in the relation to the assurance and enhancement of academic standards, the quality of taught programmes and the quality of the student learning experience, across the wider, global University.

The Academic Quality Project Officer is a temporary, full-time role for 18 months to support two key, institution-wide projects within the Pioneering in Education strand of Strategy 2025: the Review of the Academic Architecture and the Development and Delivery of the HWU Award.

The Review of the Academic Architecture is a major project to relook at the structure/architecture of the University’s entire undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes and at the structure of the academic year to enhance and improve the efficiency of learning, teaching and assessment, to increase the attractiveness of our programmes and to enhance the student learning experience.

The HWU Award is a major project to put in place an award-based framework to recognise students’ achievement of the HWU Graduate Attributes/Outcomes through extra-curricular activities. The HWU Award encompasses additionally employability, alumni engagement, volunteering and sustainability.

This is a fixed term contract for 18 months at Grade 7 (£33,309 to £40,927)

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level project support for the Review of the Academic Architecture and the introduction of the Heriot-Watt Award
  • Develop and deliver briefings and presentations to University committees on both projects
  • Produce written reports, including recommendations, for consideration and approval by University committees
  • Plan, organise and conduct global consultation events and surveys, including staff, students and external stakeholders
  • Revise Regulations, policies and procedures in order to ensure the effective implementation of both projects
  • Collaborate with colleagues to put in place the underpinning infrastructure, including systems requirements, for the effective implementation of both projects
  • Plan and deliver briefing sessions, workshops and training sessions, and produce supporting materials, to assist all stakeholders in implementing the agreed outcomes of both projects
  • Establish processes for monitoring the success of both projects post-implementation
  • Provide support for key University events

Education, Qualifications & Experience:

These are some of the criteria on which the short-listing and recruitment selection will be made:


  • Educated to first degree level or equivalent or equivalent practical experience in the workplace.
  • Experience of working in Higher Education in a role with responsibility for the delivery and/or co-ordination of learning and teaching projects.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of relevant legal, statutory and governance applications and turning them into good practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and presentation skills, able to understand and communicate complex issues effectively.
  • Demonstrable ability to work quickly, flexibly and accurately in a dynamic, changing and pressured environment.
  • Experience of working closely with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to research, analyse and present complex information effectively
