The Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (CLCC) at Imperial College is seeking a lecturer of Japanese to join our team on a part time basis teaching the language to students on our undergraduate courses and to participants of our evening classes.
Imperial is committed to providing an educational experience that empowers graduates to be leaders in their chosen careers and contribute meaningfully to society. In the academic year 2012–13, the College successfully introduced the Imperial Horizons programme for undergraduate students which, in 2020, became embedded within the students curriculum as part of their degree programme. The programme, based in the CLCC, aims to put science in the context of the wider world and to develop interdisciplinary approaches to learning and thinking. This programme includes a range of modules in the fields of Languages, the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Japanese Programme is well-established and attracts hundreds of students every year. The appointed Lecturer will join a team of Japanese teaching staff who work on the Horizons undergraduate courses and the Centre’s evening class programme. The role therefore involves teaching Japanese to undergraduate students from a scientific, technical or medical background and to the general public, members of College staff and postgraduates as part of our evening class offer.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for delivering one or more of the Centre’s 20-week Japanese courses to undergraduate students.
The role includes preparing in person (or online, in some situations) classes using the approved syllabus and textbooks, designing teaching and course materials, maintaining class information on the Centre’s VLE, setting and marking homework, helping designing and marking summative assessments, including coursework, oral and written examinations. You will undertake relevant course administration, including keeping the attendance register updated and inputting student marks into online marksheets.
You will provide comprehensive feedback to students and offer support and advice where required. You will communicate regularly and effectively with the Japanese Coordinator and with the team, respond promptly to correspondence, liaise regularly with the Centre administration and attend sectional and department meetings.
You may be required to teach in the classroom and online, when necessary, you will be expected to have a laptop or desktop computer with an internet connection capable of supporting online teaching.
Part-time post with variable hours (2 to 6 hours weekly) to be agreed annually with the right candidate. Undergraduate classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 pm and you may be asked to deliver classes on one or more of those days, depending on annual demand. There is the possibility of more work on the evening class programme, but this varies from year to year and is only available subject to student demand.
