Madingley Hall and its gardens is a magnificent location, owned by the University of Cambridge. It is a Grade I listed building, first constructed in 1543, situated in the village of Madingley which is around four miles to the west of the City of Cambridge, close to the intersections of the M11, A14 and A428.

Madingley Hall has a 24-hour reception service, 13 meeting rooms, 62 ensuite bedrooms, a professional kitchen, licensed bar, coffee shop, Lodge House available as rentable short-stay accommodation and is set in 8-acres of grounds including superb Capability Brown designed gardens. The site incorporates a large car park.

Madingley Hall directly employees over 30FTE colleagues and a pool of flexibly employed zero-hours staff. In a typical trading cycle, turnover is around £2 million.

We are seeking to appoint a General Manager to lead Hall Operations, taking overall responsibility for the running of the Hall and on-site health and safety.

The Hall Operations team is responsible for the day-to-day safe and surplus generating functioning of the Hall as a high-quality commercial venue.

Reporting to the Director of Continuing Education, the General Manager will advise on the safe, effective and efficient operation of the Hall. The role holder will be part of the Senior Leadership Team of the Institute of Continuing Education. The General Manager will work closely with other Institute staff including the Head of Human Resources, Head of Finance and Head of Marketing. On a University-wide basis, they will engage with the Estates Division, the Safety Office and Security team. The General Manager will also interact with peers in the collegiate University, such as college Domestic Bursars, ensuring that best practice around hospitality, quality, site maintenance and environmental sustainability are maintained.

The successful candidate will work entrepreneurially to identify new market opportunities and generate considered business cases, ensure the Hall site is operated within budgeted parameters and generates an operating surplus. Working with the Institute's Head of Marketing, they will advise on appropriate marketing (including social media) and communication approaches (e.g. TripAdvisor and other rating sites), commensurate with the University of Cambridge's brand.

Educated to degree level or with corresponding professional experience in the hospitality sector, the successful applicant will have proven experience and ability in:

-strategic and operational management with a customer-centred outlook -effective people leadership, including team development, training and change management -managing teams, resources and budgets -commercial income generation in a target driven context -experience developing, implementing and continuous improvement of policies, particularly in relation to site health and safety, food hygiene and licenced premises regulations.
