The University of Exeter is delighted to advertise a full-time, permanent lectureship in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, with an open specialism within the field, broadly conceived, which complements our existing expertise.

Classics & Ancient History

The successful candidate will join one of the largest and most thriving Classics and Ancient History departments in the world, with twenty permanent staff, ranked 6th in the UK in the Times Good University Guide 2022 and 7th in the Guardian University Guide. Our research spans a wide range of specialisms, including material and visual culture, philosophy, digital humanities and classical reception, and we offer a range of single- and joint-honours undergraduate programmes in Classics, Classical Studies and Ancient History tailored to students from all backgrounds. We are proud of our commitment to offer training in ancient languages at all levels, with large numbers taking our beginners courses every year. We are equally proud of our continual commitment to expand the range and diversity of our research and curricula beyond the traditional core of the discipline.

Our research is widely recognised for its commitment to interdisciplinarity, collaboration with the arts and charity sectors, and engagement with the wider world. Our projects feed directly into UK government policy on environment and land use as well as sex education, and contribute to global wellbeing through the wide-reaching Modern Stoicism project, to the wellbeing of young trans and non-binary people, and to supporting migrants and refugees worldwide through Imagining Futures. We currently have four dynamic research Centres for Hellenistic and Romano-Greek Culture and Society, for Connectivity in the Roman World, for Knowledge in Culture in Antiquity and Beyond, and for Classical Reception. In addition staff are engaged with interdisciplinary projects and centres beyond the department such as the Sexual Knowledge Unit, the Centre for Medical History, the Global Systems Institute, the Centre for Early Modern History, and the Centre for Medieval Studies. Our research is also integrated into diverse and innovative teaching programmes, where, alongside more traditional learning and assessment forms, students have the opportunity to learn to explore creative responses to the ancient world, or how to apply Classics to contemporary issues, for instance through the Campus in Camps initiative. We have a thriving postgraduate research community of about thirty students, who run their own seminar series ExeWip, and since 1964 we have published our own departmental journal Pegasus, which has global reach.

About the role

In addition to undertaking high-quality research and appropriate admin roles, and playing a full role in the life of the Department and its relationship with the College of Humanities and the wider University, the successful candidate will be required to contribute to core teaching on our Classics and Classical Studies programmes, which includes Greek language at all levels and ancient literature both in translation and in the original. They will be able to deliver the Greek elements of our core literature modules Greek and Roman Narrative and Greek and Roman Drama (taught in translation), Greek language at beginners and intermediate levels, and Greek set texts in the original.
