The University of Surrey School of Law is committed to the highest quality scholarship and creative teaching to help students become intellectual leaders in the legal profession. The School is ranked 58th in the world in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Subject Rankings for law, and 14th in the UK. We have three main research clusters: The Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy, the Surrey Centre for International and Environmental Law and the Law and Technology Hub. Our academic staff are a dynamic, collegial and international group of experienced legal practitioners, skilled teachers and internationally leading researchers.
We seek to appoint a Financial Law expert with a specific focus on FinTech and financial regulation. The appointment may be made at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader Level. Applicants are expected to have an excellent record of scholarship with published work of international significance. Candidates should have experience in applying for, and obtaining research income, or they should demonstrate the potential to do so. Those applying at Reader level should have an established record of generating research income, leading research projects, supervising research students, and providing administrative leadership. Applicants should be able to deliver outstanding teaching in law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and must be able to teach on our FinTech & Policy MSc programme run with Surrey Business School. A qualifying law degree (LLB, JD or similar) is essential and a doctorate in law or a related field is strongly preferred. We are keen to consider candidates who combine theoretical understanding of the area with demonstrated practical experience or expertise.
Candidates should show resourcefulness and enthusiasm for improving learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and be able to contribute teaching and administrative leadership on our Law & Technology Pathway LLB, and our FinTech & Policy MSc. Candidates will also show the ability to strengthen our Law & Technology Hub through collaborative research projects and leadership at School and University levels, including with the FinTech centre in the Surrey Business School.
Finally, it is essential for candidates to possess all the qualities essential to high quality pastoral care and student support: compassion, empathy, proactiveness, conscientiousness, organisation and resilience. In return for the above, we offer a generous remuneration package, which includes relocation assistance where appropriate, the latest teaching facilities, and access to a variety of staff development opportunities.
We are committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equitable opportunities for all in pursuit of Surrey’s vision of being a leading global University. We work together to create a truly inclusive culture. We place great value on diversity and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We are seeking to increase the diversity within our community and would particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities. Following University policy, appointments are always made on merit.
