The University of Sheffield has an exciting research opportunity for a Research Associate with skills in dynamic systems data-driven modelling to join a major 3-year EPSRC-funded Precision Manufacturing programme (link) - NanoMan: Self-Optimising Nanoscale Manufacturing Platforms for Achieving Multiscale Precision.

The University of Leeds and Sheffield have recently been awarded £1.47m on the EPSRC project titled Nano-man: Self-Optimising Nanoscale Manufacturing Platforms for Achieving Multiscale Precision.

In this project we will build platform technologies, comprising advanced chemical reactors underpinned by computational intelligence, which can scale up production of advanced nanoparticle products (polymer nanoparticles and quantum dots) without loss in the precise control over structural dimensions which are achieved in research laboratories. We will build autonomous laboratory reactors which can be programmed to monitor the nanoparticle formation process in real time and relate conditions to the particle properties. Throughout the manufacturing process, machine learning algorithms will direct the reactors towards achieving the desired specification through 'self-optimisation' of conditions. This will require a relationship between data obtained in the lab experiments and the product specification to be elucidated. We will take the optimised laboratory nanoparticle formation processes and demonstrate scale-up in several manufacturing environments, including R&D process laboratories and manufacturing facilities at our partner’s sites.

Whilst attached to NanoMan, you will also be joining a highly active and stimulating group of researchers in the Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering. We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
