We are looking for an ambitious Post-Doctoral Fellow in a collaborative study (led by Dr Bhuvaneish Selvaraj and Prof Siddharthan Chandran) to contribute and expand knowledge of pathophysiology of neuronal dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases such as motor neuron disease (MND) with an ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic approaches. In particular, this project will investigate neurophysiological dysfunction in MND using various patient derived 2D and 3D stem cell models. This project will also determine the role of glial cells in modulating neuronal physiology both in health and disease.

The Opportunity:

We established human experimental platforms/SOPs for directed differentiation to spinal motor neurons, cortical neurons, and glia (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglia) as well as identified a series of routine in vitro assays. Utilising these tools combined with genome-editing technologies we have previously identified neurophysiological dysfunction in neurons from ALS patients (Selvaraj et al., Nat Comm 2018, Zhao et al., Glia 2020). We now seek to extend these studies with a focus on understanding underlying molecular mechanism of neuro-physiological dysfunction in MND utilising patch-clamp electrophysiology, optogenetics etc.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Motivated neuroscientist with an interest in neuron-glial cross talk
  • Expertise in vitro patch clamp electrophysiology of human stem cell derived neurons and glia
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
