University of Dundee - Molecular and Clinical Medicine

Location: Dundee
Salary: £87,534 to £116,313 Clinical Professor
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 24th November 2021
Closes: 20th December 2021
Job Ref: SMED0872

We are seeking to appoint an internationally leading clinical academic to provide leadership in the Discipline of Pathology and to develop Molecular Pathology Research and Teaching in the School of Medicine in Dundee.

The School of Medicine (SMED) is co-located with Ninewells Hospital, one of the largest Teaching Hospitals in the UK. This well-established partnership integrates our Research Divisions with NHS Clinicians and Services, creating an environment that drives synergistic translational research and clinical innovation. Our goal is to provide an academic community that delivers impactful research, simultaneously training the next generation of clinical and non-clinical researchers/ academics in an environment that is interdisciplinary, encourages cross-divisional and cross School collaboration and works in partnership with the NHS, our local and global community.

Precision Medicine is a key strategic focus of SMED based on our established track record of innovation in this area as well as the unique linked bioresources and population health data. The leadership role of an academic pathologist as an expert working with and analysing human biospecimens in mechanistic investigations at the molecular level, underpins our strategy for the development and delivery of precision medicine research. This new post in Molecular Pathology will drive the development and delivery of precision medicine strategies in a number of disease areas including but not exclusively in cancer, at the interface between genomics, pathology, diagnostics and health data science. We anticipate that the research leadership provided will facilitate interaction between clinical and biomedical researchers, strengthen research collaborations between School of Medicine and School of Life Sciences and enhance the University of Dundee’s biomedical translational pathway and research impact.

This post will also provide leadership in academic pathology as a core medical discipline underpinning excellence in undergraduate and post graduate teaching.

The post is focussed on research and teaching, but clinical expertise to provide top level leadership to enhance the development of Molecular Pathology services in NHS Tayside Pathology and Genetics departments and improve research interactions and capacity between SMED and NHS Tayside, would be greatly advantageous.

Key Performance Indicators are

  • Scientific output (publications) that can be returned in the next Research Excellence Framework (REF).
  • Obtaining sufficient grant income to maintain and develop a high-quality sustainable research group.
  • Effectively collaborating with clinical and biomedical researchers in the university.
  • A contribution to teaching on taught postgraduate and/ MBChB programme.

Knowledge and Experience required

  • A medical degree and experience in Molecular Pathology, with FRCPath or equivalent.
  • GMC Registration.
  • A PhD or equivalent higher degree in a relevant research discipline.
  • Strong track record of publishing.
  • Proven ability to obtain significant grant funding.
  • Proven ability in clinical leadership.
  • Proven ability to productively collaborate with researchers, clinicians, managers and policy makers from any or all relevant disciplines.
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision.
  • Experience and skills in teaching.
