Associate Professorship (or Professorship) of Ancient History (Greek)

Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor (or Professor) of Ancient History (Greek) to be held in the Faculty of Classics in association with a Tutorial Fellowship in Ancient History at University College.  This is a full-time position based at University College, High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BH and at the Faculty of Classics, Ioannou Centre for Classical & Byzantine Studies, 66 St. Giles', Oxford, OX1 3LU.

The appointee will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating teaching and research community that performs to the highest international levels in research and publications, and will have access to the excellent research facilities that Oxford offers.  Oxford has one of the largest Classics faculties in the world, with an excellent reputation for the quality of its research and teaching.  The appointee will be a member of both the College and the University community, and will have an active role to play in the running of the College (as a member of the Governing Body and a trustee of the College) and of the University (as a member of Congregation).  College benefits include a housing allowance, or access to a joint equity scheme, an academic allowance, an entertainment allowance, lunch and dinner in College, and private health insurance.

Applications for this post are welcome from well-qualified candidates with teaching competence across the whole range of Ancient History (Greek) papers as required by the three undergraduate degrees of Classics, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History (CAAH), and Ancient and Modern History (AMH).  The successful candidate will be expected to engage in advanced study and academic research, and to enthuse and inspire students at both undergraduate and graduate level through tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision.

The successful candidate will have completed a doctorate in a relevant field (or submitted a completed doctoral dissertation for examination by the advertised closing date for this position), and will have evidence of distinguished research and/or research potential in the area of Ancient History, a publication record of international standing, appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, and evidence of excellence in teaching Ancient History.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon (UK time) on Monday 24 January 2022.  It is anticipated that interviews will take place in early March (date to be confirmed).
