The Academic Section is part of the University's Professional Services and is headed by the Academic Registrar. The Section is responsible for managing all aspects of student and academic administration and plays a central role in delivering the University's commitment to excellence in education across the institution.

The Student Life Directorate is part of the Academic Section and encompasses the Employability and Careers, Student Experience, Skills For Success and the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity services. We are committed to innovation and continuous enhancement within our services; and to working collaboratively across all areas of the University, and beyond, for the benefit of our students.

You will be a part of the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service, which is responsible for providing a professional and proactive service for students within a wider healthy and inclusive environment. We are looking for someone with a professional approach who is able to identify opportunities for collaborative working and can contribute to our vision for proactive and diverse services aimed at supporting students to thrive and get the most out of their time at Essex.

Duties of the Role

You will provide non-judgmental coaching support to students on a daily basis, using a solution focused approach, empowering students to fulfil their potential as individuals, enabling them to develop coping strategies and to be active participants in their own educational experiences. You will communicate with teaching departments to ensure that reasonable adjustments are put in place to ensure students are not disadvantaged due to their mental health or other disabilities.  You will help students navigate appropriate support services and will liaise directly with health care services when appropriate.  You will also develop and deliver proactive wellbeing initiatives and interventions based on partnership and integration.

Skills and qualifications required

You will have a good general education at least to degree standard, or equivalent, plus a relevant professional qualification. Your experience will include working with people with a range of emotional and mental health difficulties and you will need to be able to take responsibility for resolving complex matters including during crisis situations for students. We are looking for someone who can manage multiple projects and priorities plus demonstrate an enabling approach for students.

There is one full-time post available, to be based at the Loughton campus, but travel may be required to other campuses to meet operational needs.

Due to the nature of the role, it is essential you can fulfil the staff vetting requirements in respect of University Positions of Trust.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.
