Equity in Doctoral Education will improve access and participation for racialised groups to postgraduate research (PGR), across Nottingham Trent, Sheffield Hallam and Liverpool John Moores Universities. The programme of work will target recruitment, admissions and transition as critical points of systemic inequality in doctoral education. Key deliverables include: the development and implementation of a new, work-based partnership approach to PGR recruitment which will be piloted with NHS partners in the cities of Nottingham, Sheffield and Liverpool; the co-production of a novel competency-based PGR admissions framework through national consultation with major stakeholders, in partnership with the UK Council for Graduate Education and the delivery of a large-scale pilot and evaluation of the new framework; and the development and delivery of a bespoke coaching programme, co-created between researcher developers at the three universities and Grit Breakthrough Programmes educational charity for postgraduate researchers from racialised groups, supervisors, and professional service staff. Evaluation is a core part of the programme and comprises extensive quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis related to engagement, participation, application numbers, admissions and progression to gain a rich understanding of the efficacy of programme and the resultant impact.
Equity in Doctoral Education is funded through the Office for Students and Research England’s funding to improve black, Asian and minority ethnic students’ access to postgraduate research.
