The Directorate seeks to deliver, enhance and adapt an effective and sustainable governance framework upholding the rights and obligations of all stakeholders, including international stakeholders. The purpose is to support sound, effective and accountable decision making and stewardship of the University's resources and reputation. The Directorate's core objective is to protect Heriot-Watt University's reputation, brand, values and assets and its definition of Success to maintain compliance with standards (legislation, codes of practice etc.) and enhance value.

The University has merged its Health & Safety Service with its Security Service to form a new group titled SafeGuarding Services, which is a division within Governance and Legal Services Directorate.  The Service also encompasses emergency incident planning and management across all of the University’s sites in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia.

Job Description

The role holder will provide additional skills and support to the Health & Safety Team in provision of competent advisory services to the University as required in terms of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Primarily to support the implementation of the University’s health & safety management framework and supporting processes, in line with the University’s strategic objectives, to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, the University Health and Safety Policy, and current best practice, across the wide range of activities undertaken by the University. The role holder will provide general health and safety advisory services.  They will also support the centralisation of health and safety systems and risk assessments processes, investigate and report on accidents and dangerous occurrences, as well as liaise with relevant Enforcing Authorities and other regulatory bodies.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Education

Essential

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Minimum TechIOSH membership

Desirable

  • NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of health & safety delivery in a relevant environment
  • Extensive experience of conducting inspections and audits

Desirable

  • Experience of interfacing with electronic management systems
