About the Role
This role is based within the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (QMLAC) in the School of Law. The QMLAC provides a free, accessible, client centred advice service to the public. We act as a first-tier advice agency: providing preliminary advice on the strength of the client’s case, the processes that need to be followed, and an explanation of complex legal issues. The QMLAC also provides representation on social welfare appeals in the First Tier Tribunal. In addition to advice for individuals, the QMLAC undertakes multiple projects public legal education and Street Law projects in our local community. These aim to empower the public about their legal rights and responsibilities.

The QMLAC Director (clinical legal education) is an academic role with significant operational and management responsibilities. The role leads a team of 8 members of QMLAC staff, 200 volunteer lawyers and 400+ Law students as well as being responsible for the overall running and organisation of the QMLAC. The role is line managed by a senior academic and reports into the QMLAC Management Committee.

The role will also involve module convening and teaching on two optional undergraduate modules in clinical legal education:

  • The Practice of Law in a Clinical Environment, and
  • Public Legal Education and Community Street Law.

This post will lead the Centre, engage in significant teaching responsibilities (curricular and extra-curricular) and oversee and assist with the day-to-day running of a busy student law clinic. The clinic is an in-person clinic and the post holder will be expected to be based within the QMLAC at least 4 days per week.

About You
You will have a higher degree in Law or relevant professional qualification or equivalent professional experience. You will have experience of working in a busy administrative environment, managing a team and teaching. You will be highly organised and have excellent IT and communication skills. Experience of working with undergraduate students would be an advantage.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is a full-time, 6-month maternity cover appointment with an expected start date of the 17th of October 2022. The starting salary will be Grade 5 through to 6, in the range of £43,069 – £53,625 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
