The Faculty of English wishes to appoint to an Assistant Professorship in the Literature of the Long Eighteenth Century from 1 September 2023.
We seek applicants who have research and teaching interests in the Long Eighteenth Century. We are open to applicants tackling a wide range of Anglophone literature and approaches, including interdisciplinary work within the field. Applicants with research and teaching interests in the following fields are especially welcome: literature of the period outside the British Isles; gender and/or sexuality studies, theoretical and/or historical in approach; digital humanities.
At undergraduate level, the appointee will be expected to contribute to dedicated specialist courses in this area, and also, according to their interests and expertise, to the wider range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
The successful applicant will be able to conduct original research in their field, generating new interpretations, arguments, methods and associations which will have international reach and significance. They will be expected to engage closely with other researchers in the Faculty and, where appropriate to the research concerned, to develop proposals to attract significant external funding. We intend to appoint a scholar whose work will make a substantial difference to the way in which the study of this area is pursued and who is able to develop the kinds of public and professional engagement that will maximise the impact of their research.
Candidates should have a completed PhD and an exceptional record of research and publication in a relevant subject area. The successful applicant will support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence in teaching. They will be expected to offer undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, as well as to be able to attract applications from the strongest PhD candidates worldwide.
